REQUIREMENTS & FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS

This (Draft) Document is being produced to provide information on the proposed Universal Warning Sign:Yucca Mountain: Poppin' Fresh. It is to act as a guideline in defining and developing proposed system requirements, analysis, design, and deliverables.

Purpose and background: The purpose of this project is to develop, test and release a web-based system with this makeup:

Webpages consisting of an animated simulation of the Poppin' Fresh Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) warning signal/safe entry system with content consisting of the simulation and digital representations of various design documents including scaled drawings, material lists, etc. (The Yellow Path).

Webpages designed to allow users/visitors access to information pertaining to Yucca Mountain activities (The Red Path).

Webpages designed to allow users/visitors access to information detailing what can be done to reduce the production of high-level nuclear wastes.

"Golden" CD - A CD containing an ISO9660 level 2 CD-ROM file format image of the complete code and images for the first version. This should be done each time a new version of the site is released.

The background of the project is described in the Call for Submissions to the Universal Warning Sign: Yucca Mountain.

System Overview

Objective: Create a web-based, system which shall display a proposed "permanent" warning of the dangers beneath Yucca Mountain. The system should also provide sources of information on the means to participate in the ongoing debate and actions concerning Yucca Mt Repository and like facilities. Sources of information regarding alternatives to the current path of creating radioactive wastes should also be available through this system.

System Description:

The web-based series of pages shall be comprised of three paths (red, yellow, green). Note: As of 26.0.02002, only the yellow path is under development. Development on the other two paths will resume when a decision is made on what material is currently appropriate for release. The main path is the yellow path, or "pop up when this turkey is done" path, a proposal to create a warning system which shall also act as an agent signifying to future inhabitants it is safe to again physically search for the existence of petroleum . The red path, or "intentional intrusion" path, shall consist of links to inform site visitors of actions available to learn about and actively participate in the ongoing dialogues and actions concerning nuclear waste generation, transport, handling, storage or destruction. The green path shall consist of links to information relating to alternatives to the present set of circumstances and influences encouraging reliance on such sources as nuclear energy.

System Charter:

The Poppin' Fresh system shall:

Allow viewing of The Poppin' Fresh warning system. Including an animation showing the functions of the Permanent Warning/Pop Up "It's done" timer, based on the popular, culturally important "Pop Up Turkey Timer". The animation must provide the user a perspective of the expected life requirements of the warning system. Other design documentation, drawings and pertinent documents in the planning of the Poppin' Fresh proposal shall be available for inspection.

Allow navigation through hypertextual links to sources of information regarding Yucca Mountain and like sites and what actions and dialogues are available to the system user.

Allow navigation through hypertextual links to sources of information regarding alternatives to nuclear and petrochemical energy sources.

Provide user email and fax contact with site developers and maintainers.

Provide accessibility to all potential users. This involves not only means to provide all site information in means accessible by the physically disabled user but also to those users with varying hardware/software systems. Requirements for this include providing a text only path through the website, meeting Bobby3.2 ( http://www.cast.org/bobby ) approval. Also, using tools and methods listed in the Web Techniques online article ( http://www.webreview.com/2001/06_29/developers/index02.shtml ), Jakob Nielsen's guidelines for accessibility as outlined in his book, Designing With Usability. And, finally, complying with Section 508 [29 U. S. C. ' 794d] concerning accessibility for government websites (http://www.section508.gov ).

Provide a simple, short online users guide explaining the purpose and use of the system.

Provide simple administration tools for periodic testing of system elements.

Expected operational environment (hardware, peripherals, etc.):

This system shall involve:

User-based browser of choice (system must be able to handle Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, AOL, text browsers such as lynx )

HTML/javascript external interface

PHP4 shall be called from the HTML interface to display web pages based on data contained in the backend database

Backend mySQL database storage of dynamic data used in the red and green paths.

Apache webserver configured for PHP.

UNIX(r), preferably linux. platform

Internet Service Provider able to provide an environment as described above.

Requirements

Functional, operational (interface, resource, performance, etc.), and data requirements.

This section requires further analysis work particularly in identifying the Key Functions of the System. The system is still in many ways at the initial stages of analysis. At this point, we have these Subsystems identified. Now as analysis progresses we should begin to create and use case scenarios to allow a better definition of the system's functions.

Top Level Subsystems comprising Poppin' Fresh system:

I. Poppin' Fresh Yellow Path Subsystem:

1. HTML Description of "Poppin' Fresh Universal Warning Sign/Safe Exploration Event Signaler"

2. HTML Drawings of metrics and materials for Popup

3. HTML Animation/SlideShow of 10k years prior to insertion of Warning System through 10k years after insertion.

II. Intentional Intrusion Red Path Subsystem:

1. Dynamically produced Webpages of topical sites and events information regarding Yucca Mountain

III. Green Path Subsystem:

1. Dynamically produced Webpages of sites and information for alternatives and options regarding nuclear materials production and disposal.

IV. Dynamic Text Markup Language (DTML) page production subsytem:

1. PHP calls and functions

2. mySQL database with necessary information to create DTML pages (data structures to be determined)

V. Comment/Request email Subsystem:

1. subscribe/unsubscribe features for email notification of site changes

2. PHP script to parse and handle responds to user requests for notification

VI. Help and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Subsystem:

1. In this version, only a short users guide will be available from a hypertext link.

Timelines

Given the short amount of time in planning this document, it was impossible to carefully consider timelines and milestones. A preliminary consideration has produced this notion, the project including building the yellow, red and green paths can be accomplished with approximately 100 additional manhours. A date of 15 January 2002 is assumed to be an easily reachable milestone in which the system can be designed, coded, tested and handed-off for a production implementation of Poppin' Fresh v.1.
